There was a time when the humans, gods and devils were free to move how they pleased. However, they were not happy completely, but they were as humans together. The humans did not know of the gods and devils, nor the other "mystical" creatures. So, they were safe.

Those who were of gods and devils, the sub species along with them, had special abilities. As though they looked human, they still were not. An illusion was placed over the human's eyes to make them see what the stronger beings wanted them to see. It was for protection.

Awakenings: Chapter 1She wasn't always like this. After what happened at Alcatraz, things were starting to get settled. Sort of. First off, she had gone and gotten the cure. She had not been around for the final battle. When she came back, Bobby was able to touch her. Things were good.
The Brotherhood had gone into hiding, since they were now considered terrorists. Magneto was human, he was no longer a threat. Mystique's, rather, Raven's whereabouts were unknown. Jean, the Professor and Scott... They were all gone.
